Karen Austin portrayed Shannon Adama's mother, Ruth. She was affectionately known as "Tsattie" (Grandma) to her grandson, William. Austin appeared in eight episodes.

Karen Elizabeth Austin was born as Karen Austin Elizabeth. She was a Canadian actress, known for Caprica (2009), The Eye (2008), Passengers (2008) and When a Stranger Calls Back (1993). She performed at Canada's Stratford Festival in 1978 and 1979.
Austin was married to Mel Tuck. Tuck is a highly regarded pioneer of Canadian theatre who taught, coached and mentored thousands of Canadian actors including Austin as well as other Caprica alumni: John Pyper-Ferguson, Hiro Kanagawa, Teryl Rothery, Catherine Haggquist, Jill Teed and Roger Cross.
Karen Austin died on April 2, 2011.[1][2]
