Tim Hunter was born on June 15, 1947, in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of writer Ian McLellan Hunter. He was a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Hunter studied at Harvard and the American Film Institute in Los Angeles (directing, critical studies).
He is a director and writer known for River's Edge (1986), Control (2004) and The Saint of Fort Washington (1993).
